PENHALIGON’S – St Davids Centre, Cardiff

This project marked the Welsh debut of the prestigious British perfume house, Penhaligon’s. Located in the premium “Hayes” area of St David’s Cardiff, the 420 sq ft boutique required an intricate, narrative-driven fit-out. Our joinery team was central to realizing a space that feels less like a shop and more like a curated Victorian sensory gallery.

Project Overview

The Penhaligon’s brand is defined by its eccentricity and heritage. The Cardiff store design focuses on “Retail Theatre”—blending traditional craftsmanship with modern digital elements. Our joiners were tasked with creating a highly detailed environment featuring rich textures, hidden compartments, and bespoke furniture that reflects the brand’s 150-year history.

Key Contributions

Our specialist joiners delivered a high-spec package that included:

  • The Fragrance Sommelier Bar: A central, freestanding “Profiling Table” crafted with integrated storage and cable management for digital scent-profiling tools.
  • Apothecary-Style Wall Cabinetry: Floor-to-ceiling shelving units finished in “William’s Green” (the brand’s signature hue). These units featured intricate mouldings, traditional mortise and tenon joints, and custom-routed grooves for LED strip lighting.
  • The Olfactorium & Engraving Station: Construction of a dedicated personalisation zone, requiring precision-cut surfaces to house heavy engraving machinery and delicate glass displays.
  • Antique-Effect Flooring & Panelling: Installation of reclaimed-style timber flooring and wainscotting, carefully treated to achieve an “aged” aesthetic while maintaining the durability required for a high-footfall shopping centre.

Challenges & Solutions

  • Technical Integration (The Magic Monocle): We had to seamlessly embed digital screens and “Magic Monocle” sensors into traditional timber fixtures. Our joiners worked to sub-millimetre tolerances to ensure the tech was flush with the woodwork, hiding all wiring within the cabinetry frames.
  • Heritage Detail in a Modern Shell: St David’s is a contemporary mall, but Penhaligon’s requires a “vintage” feel. We achieved this by using heavy-duty timber substrates finished with high-quality veneers and traditional hand-painted techniques to bridge the gap between modern retail standards and old-world charm.

The Result: A jewel-box of a store that successfully brings Penhaligon’s signature London aesthetic to Cardiff. The project was lauded for its “invisible” integration of technology within classic British joinery.
