ESCAPE HUNT – Xscape, Milton Keynes

This project was a unique undertaking for our team at the Xscape in Milton Keynes. Unlike a standard retail fit-out, this was a high-complexity “design and build” style project where we stepped into a dual role: Site Management and Lead Joinery Contractors.

Our team oversaw the transformation of a massive shell unit into a multi-room, immersive entertainment venue for Escape Hunt, the global leader in escape room experiences.

Project Overview

The brief required the construction of several highly themed, technically advanced escape rooms, a central “Steampunk” inspired lounge, and a premium corporate briefing area. Because we managed the site from start to finish, we were responsible for the health and safety, subcontractor coordination, and the critical path of the entire build, alongside the physical installation of the game environments.

Key Contributions & Management Scope

Our involvement spanned the entire project lifecycle, focusing on:

  • Site Management & Coordination: We ran the site daily, managing all trades—including electrical, HVAC, and fire safety—ensuring that the complex mechanical and digital triggers of the games were integrated into our structural builds.
  • Themed Room Construction: Our joiners built the actual “cells” and game environments from the ground up. This included hidden doors, false walls, and secret compartments that required robust framing to withstand heavy daily use by players.
  • Bespoke “Steampunk” Reception & Bar: A centerpiece of the venue, we crafted a custom-built bar and reception desk featuring intricate timber mouldings, industrial-style finishes, and integrated lighting to set the Victorian-adventurer tone.
  • Puzzle & Prop Integration: We worked closely with game designers to install “low-tech” physical puzzles and “high-tech” electronic sensors, ensuring all joinery was millimetre-perfect to allow the game mechanics to function flawlessly.
  • Back-of-House & Briefing Areas: Installation of high-spec cabinetry for the Game Masters’ control room and sleek, durable storage for player belongings.

Challenges & Solutions

  • Structural Soundproofing: In a loud environment like Xscape, acoustic integrity between game rooms is vital. We utilized specialist sound-dampening stud work and heavy-duty door seals to ensure “game immersion” wasn’t broken by noise from the mall or adjacent rooms.
  • Navigating Complex Logistics: Operating within Xscape Milton Keynes meant managing deliveries and waste removal in a 24/7 leisure environment. Our management team coordinated all “noisy works” and large material movements to ensure zero disruption to the cinema and restaurants nearby.
  • Precision “Fail-Safes”: Escape rooms require secret doors that look like solid walls but must open easily. Our joiners utilized heavy-duty pivot hinges and magnetic latches hidden within the woodwork to create a “magic” effect for the players.

The Result: A world-class, five-star rated immersive venue delivered on time and within budget. By managing the site ourselves, we ensured that the quality of the joinery was never compromised by the complex MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) requirements of the games.
